Visual Arts rubric for student self assessment
I worked with Alice in order to accomplish one of my professional goals, which is to continue developing and implementing student self-assessments. I decided to tackle a reoccuring 4th grade landscape painting project, whereby students explore and practice 3 different styles; surrealism, impressionism and abstract art, and create their own versions inspired by one style that is outside their comfort zone. The goals of this assessment tool is for students to obtain a clear understanding of the project expectations, practice self-awareness and gain insight into their process and behaviors in art. To create this tool I purchased a visual arts rubric template from an arts curriculum website called Glitter Meets Glue. With Alice's feedback, I edited the rubric to reflect the main project benchmarks including language and visual icons for each category. In addition, I will provide students with a page of written project expectations before they start the painting process.

I love the rubric and how visual it is as well as how much it will make expectations and performance clear to students. Self-assessments are so powerful for students and I look forward to seeing the 4th grade landscape art next year, especially knowing more about what I'm looking for/at.
