Wow! What an amazing weekend to spend amongst the Redwoods at a YMCA camp in La Honda. Met lots of educators and program leaders that are bringing inspiring new ways to teach conservation and environmental studies at their schools. Here is a summary of some of the takeaways:
- How to incorporate humor into nature lessons to keep student attention in appropriate ways
- Teaching methods: Qualities of an "Entertainer," "Sage on the Stage" and "Guide on the Side" Educating Styles
- How to incorporate music into nature learning
- How nature journaling and other nature groups can be safe spaces for LGBTQ+ communities
- Methods of nature exploration that are safe and collaborative (the string activity)
- How to use theatre, play and the arts to ignite interest in nature
- Organizations that offer numerous free lessons to schools that are interested
In addition, I was able to share my lesson on Story Stone Play - a way to creatively engage students to interact and care for their world through storytelling. Here are some pictures!
Thank you for this incredible opportunity to expand horizons in environmental awareness in education!
