This 6 session online PD was an excellent workshop focused on what is important to consider when facilitating professional development:
7 Principles for Adult Learning are 1) Adults must feel safe to learn. 2) Adults come to learning experiences with histories. 3). Adults need to know why we have to learn something. 4). Adults want agency in their learning. 5) Adults need practice to internalize learning. 6) Adults have a problem-centered approach to learning 7) Adults want to learn.
I feel like I have always believed these principles and as a teacher having attended many PDs over the years, I know what I need as a learner and these are aligned with that. The workshop gave me many protocols and tools to plan for effective PD as well as ways to be sure to engage and address the wide range of learners. I found the 5 Whys to Purpose protocol a great way to truly dial down to the core 'why' for PD and will certainly use it. Essentially it has you answering the Why am I doing this? in a deep way that gets beyond the surface to the true drive behind the session you're planning. All the ideas and protocols are in The PD Book and if you are interested in a copy for yourself, please email me and I will be happy to get one for you! If you facilitate any groups, these are some great core skills and 'facilitator commandments' to consider.
