W I am the upper school sewing teacher who was invited to work with lower school art and makery. During our Idea lab we discussed the difference between embellishing vs mending and came up with the idea that the student will bring a garment or personal item in to visibly mend and then present at the art show. I will be teaching them different sewing/mending techniques having them sew a good old-fashioned mending stitch sampler using a muslin tote bag. They will then be able to apply what they learned to mending their personal item. I will be working on the stitch/mending portion of this project.
My big takeaway from this session is that I am delighted to get to work with the 4th graders and their teachers setting up good groundwork for their future sewing experiences that will come when they land in upper school. I am also excited to hear that through Elizabeth they will be exposed to the realities of fast fashion and why mending is such an important part of sustainability. My goal has been getting kids to really consider where and how clothing is made and introducing this at an earlier age is fantastic!
