The NCTM Conference took place October 24 - 27 in Washington, DC. We were able to choose from a vast array of more than 500 workshops and presentations during the conference.
A few of the sessions I got to attend included:
Anti-Racist math education
Be Curious, Not Judgemental - an approach to increasing engagement in math class
Mindfulness and Mathematics
Creating connected classrooms
Metacognition in the Math Classroom
Some of my main takeaways from this conference were: strategies to incorporate inquiry in the math classroom, ways to increase student engagement in all levels of math, the importance of reflective writing in math classes, the importance of creating a learning gap in each student, and the power that visual problems can have in making word problems easier to understand. These tools and strategies have already helped make lessons more creative in both 6th and 8th-grade math classes and I am excited to continue implementing nuggets that I learned during the conference.
Those sessions sound great and I hope it was a great time to learn and get to know your colleagues better as well:)!
