Idea Lab - Fourth Grade Math
Angelique, Tammi and I met to review the fourth grade math curriculum. We began by going over what has been used in the past, what has been successful, and what concepts are a priority to cover as we prepare the students for fifth grade. We shared our various experiences with Bridges, Investigations, and Cathy Fosnot and came up with a plan for which curriculum we would focus on for each unit we teach. I was able to dive a little deeper into the Cathy Fosnot materials. They are fabulous! Additionally, we discussed this incoming fourth grade class and thought about strategies to support the wide range of learners coming in. Then, using the existing curriculum map as a guide, we decided on a scope and sequence for the year, with particular focus on the first fourth months. We also began developing an exciting new interdisciplinary unit! We spent time researching/planning ways in which we can incorporate math into a study of Native Californians, and how we can devise mini-lessons around data and statistics that are teachable even during the busy days of the fourth grade play. It was fabulous to talk math with Tammi and Angelique and get excited for all we can do to help foster a love of math in our students this year!

Welcome to Burke's and I look forward to working with you! Sounds like you had a great collaborative time with the team and I am excited to see how math instruction looks in 4th grade! As a former K-5 math instructional coach, I am also happy to help in anyway so feel free to reach out anytime!
