1st Grade Ocean Unit Revamp: Indigenous Perspectives
In collaboration with Anna Y., we took a closer look at the sustainability unit I implemented this year and revamped it to include indigenous perspectives and artists. In doing so we flushed out additional essential questions and themes and changed the order, structure, and format of the lessons. For example, we will reach out to a speaker, perhaps a local Ohlone artist, to come in and speak about art or the relationship of culture to the ocean. We will discuss the importance of ritual art-making by creating a group “altar” that will help us practice collective gratitude and respect. Finally, we will re-reinforce the importance of sustainability from an anti-materialist perspective.
