Visible Mending Project - 4th Grade Makery

In collaboration with Art, Science, and Sewing, 4th graders will work on a mending project for the Art Festival Showcase in May. Students will bring an article of clothing or wearable artifact from home that is torn or damaged in some way. They will learn various mending and patching techniques to restore the clothing item and give it a new life. This ties to our work around sustainability, investigating the phenomenon of fast fashion and how clothes can be diverted from the landfill.

In Makery, students will practice various mending and sewing techniques on a personal tote-bag. The tote-bag will later be used to store the materials and supplies for the mending project. We will also encourage students to develop transferrable skills, like mending clothes at home and reattaching buttons. An option is to add Lilypad Arduino to light up the clothing with conductive thread.

Some of us plan to attend a sashiko mending class at Workshop SF on August 13th.
