Lunar New Year Collaboration with Lisa Mandelstein

Lunar New Year 2025- Year of the SNAKE!

Collaboration Between 3rd Music, 5th Mandarin, and API

Summer Grant - ½ day each for Lisa Mandelstein and Xuemei Li

August 12, 2024




Xuemei and Lisa - we met and discussed how to support each other’s curriculum around Lunar New Year, taking into consideration the different US and LS assemblies. We researched for materials and also shared resources previously collected. We linked Google Slide decks that have been made to support each item/activity. 


Lunar New Year 2025 starts on January 29th. The 3rd Lion Dance Parade will be on Thursday February 16th.

Below is a list of the activities we came up with for the 24-25 school year:


SONGS:

  1. Mo Li Hua/Jasmine Flower - 5th grade students will sing song in Mandarin and/or play recorder - Lisa will assist Xuemei with recorder and any other musical accompaniment, Xuemei will be in charge of teaching the Mandarin lyrics and pronunciation; to be performed as part of the Upper School Lunar New Year Assembly


  1. Gong Xi, Gong Xi - K-4 students to sing at beginning on Lunar New Year at out LS Assembly with help from Xuemei


NEXT STEPS: find rehearsal times in the schedule that work for Li/Mandelstein


DANCE:

  1. Dragon Dance Choreography - API or 5th Grade students will help choreograph a basic dragon dance and learn a simple drumming pattern to accompany the dancers live as part of the Upper School Lunar New Year

  2. Use the music resource book “Lion’s Roar” by Han Kuo-Huang and Patricia Shehan Campbell, p. 29-32 - basic drumming patterns - in LS Music Library

COSTUMES:

  1. Dragon Dance costume - black pants, yellow shirt and yellow scarf

  2. Lion Dance Costume - black pants, red shirts w/ Japanese personal symbols (w/ LS Art/Makery)

  3. Red & Yellow Scarves - to be used by all performers, 5th, API, and 3rd

  4. API program to design black imagery for scarves by December 15th

  5. Scarves to printed via Makery by the second week in January

  6. Xuemei will have API decide the color shirts and scarves they want (red, yellow or gold)

  7. Lisa will help order scarves as needed and coordinate with Makery/Jimmy Santosa to order shirts for each grade
