1st Grade- Art and Storytelling sustainability unit
The goal of this collaborative unit with Ms. Q is for students to utilize storytelling and art techniques to develop, create, and personify a "nature protector" character in order to develop their conservation skills. Our 8-lesson unit starts with a field trip to the Conservatory of Flowers, offering an opportunity to explore and connect with nature. This experience will guide the development of a collective story about "nature protectors" or environmental stewards. After viewing examples of nature protectors from different cultures and time periods, each student will design and sketch a nature protector mask that includes the element of nature they want to protect (water, trees, flowers, insects, etc.), and how they plan to protect it. Their final designs will be sculpted in clay and displayed in the garden permanently.
