This past week, I was able to attend the Introduction to Responsive Classroom professional development workshop alongside other Associate Teachers. This one day workshop provided an overview of responsive classroom and its guiding principles and four domains. The goal was to walk away with an understanding of what responsive classroom is, practices that can be used in the classroom, and the benefits of using RC practices.
After completing this PD, I was able to have a deeper understanding of why Burke’s implements responsive classroom practices. I found that many of the strategies taught at the workshop were already used in the classroom, such as morning meeting and interactive modeling, but I could now identify the benefits of using these.
My biggest takeaways were:
By using interactive modeling, students will better understand what to do independently in the classroom and will be able to build routines.
Morning meetings are essential for building positive community and sense of belonging
Using responsive classroom techniques cares for both the academic and social-emotional well-being of students.
I thoroughly enjoyed attending this workshop and would recommend it to anyone new to teaching or needing a refresher on responsive classroom strategies. I look forward to using my new knowledge in the classroom!
