Summary of workshop/opportunity -

I attended the White Privilege Conference. This conference has been developed to examine privilege and oppression. It provides a space to discuss white privilege, white supremacy, social justice, and antiracism. Educators can gather to discuss these issues, how they show up in the classroom, and how teachers can support students and their families.

Goals and Collaborations - What were the big takeaways from your workshops/projects? -

I enjoyed attending the conference with my colleagues, Anjali, Jonathan, and Kelley. We discussed DEIB curriculum with fellow teachers from around the country and learned from their experiences. We heard about various challenges with students, administrators, parents, and fellow colleagues from a variety of teachers from a variety of schools.

It gave me a sense of appreciation for what Burke's offers teachers and our development, as well as the school's commitment to DEIB work. Being there with my partner teacher in first grade, Anjali, gave us a chance to talk about our own practices and think about positive changes we could make for our students.

Some takeaways -

Thinking about possible adjustments to the Superstar activity in 1st grade. Language has an impact, and how we communicate with students and families makes a big difference in helping people feel connected to the community. Deep listening is essential to connecting with families and students. Doing my own work and reading to strengthen my anti-racist learning are important.

It was a wonderful conference filled with hope and inspiration. I would love to attend again to deepen my skills!
