Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)
SPACE is a new program developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Sudy Center. The whole foucs of the program is helping parents change their behavior so that they are no longer accommodating the child's anxiety. For example, if the child is only willing to wear one pair of socks to school and the parents are washing that one pair every day/every other day-the program works on a plan to gently coach the parents to be able to shift their behavior. The program also teaches the parents how to help their children build up their tolerance for uncomfortable feelings/anxiety so that the child begins to believe that they CAN wear a differnt pair of socks to school. It was an excellent training and will help me SO much in my work with kids and parents here at Burke's.
