Your role at Burke's: Director of After School and Summer Programs
When did this opportunity take place? May 1-3
Summary of workshop/ opportunity
AEOE Conference
Goals & Collaborations:
- What were your big takeaways from your workshop or project?
My biggest takeaways were around leadership. I attended a workshop around what the transition from being a colleague to a leader means and entails. I explored with my workshop fellows the considerations and challenges around that transition and how to guide others in that transition. There is a lot that goes into moving from ":doing" the work to delegating the work. It was also emphasized the importance of not being reactive, to absorbing feedback and moving forward in best ways for the program.
- How does what you learned connect to your goals this year?
As I transition from being Director this year I was able to reflect on my own journey with leadership: mistakes I have made and also how navigating challenges have helped me to grow. It fulfills my goal in helping to transition members of my team to having leadership skills they themselves will need next year.
- How might this opportunity lead to collaboration with other faculty?
The AEOE with its environmental education focus also helped to inform and guide my ongoing collaboration with 3rd grade and the Story Stone Play unit we've been developing the past few years.
- How does this PD learning or experience impact your work?
Lastly, on the leadership takeaway, I learned the importance of identifying "gray areas" in a program and working to clarify them in work with my team.
Would you recommend this opportunity? Why or why not?
Yes, absolutely. This is a wonderful conference for any educator particularly those that attend outdoor ed or funnel any kind of environmental education into their curriculums.
